KAYAK PADDLE BASICS 1

Paddle Basics is the Manhattan Kayak Company's classic introduction to sea kayaking strokes and techniques. More NY Metropolitan area students have taken this paddling course than any other of its kind. It is our most thorough learn to kayak offering. Paddle Basics 1 lays the foundation for a paddling oriented lifestyle from a great season on the Hudson and environs to decades of adventure far and wide. Participants are given the time, information and instruction to ensure that they "get it." This 3.5 to 4 hour immersion is ideal for the true beginner or eager enthusiast who wants to progress beyond "recreational" paddling. The session starts with a general briefing on the sport and our region. We then proceed to dry land training to "install" the primary propulsion and control strokes into muscle memory. After a short snack / lunch break students then learn about proper boat fit, sprayskirt attachment, rescue methods, and launching. Next, onto the water to practice the strokes learned. When the class has reached a sufficient level of proficiency, participants paddle out into the river to test the new skills against oncoming current. This final stage provides an opportunity to experience conditions beyond the embayment and a perspective from which to determine what classes or tours should come next.
